To generalize or to specialize?

While working on a general medicine unit I was approached by a specialist who inquired about a specific patient.  His question was vague and open-ended and sounded something like, “How is he doing today?”

At this point, I will note that the above doctor was a hematologist.

I distinctly remember learning about the endoplasmic reticulum in ninth grade biology. I was sitting in the back of class, trying to stay awake, wondering why I needed to know about this seemingly insignificant organelle.

The Lazy River

I work on a busy lung unit in one of Pittsburgh’s major hospitals. We care for a variety of patients with various lung ailments, most of them severe.

One of our patients has been with us for quite a while. Ben was involved in an accident which resulted in traumatic brain injury.
